A label looks good, the barcode is readable and the material seems suitable. But is that enough for series production? When it comes to technical identification solutions, the answer is often: not yet. Only when the material, adhesive, printing process, converting technology and actual application work together can a solution deliver reliable long-term performance.
This is where label sampling and initial sample inspection come into play. Robos-labels supports companies in Automotive & Mobility, Technical Industries and other demanding sectors – from the first identification sample through to documented product and process approval.
Whether an Initial Sample Inspection Report (EMPB), PPAP or PPF/PPA according to VDA Volume 2, the objective is not documentation for its own sake, but greater confidence before series production begins. After all, a defect identified early is usually much easier to correct than a problem affecting thousands of components already in production.
When a Label Becomes a Series-Production Component
A rating plate on a rough cast surface, a permanently readable Data Matrix code or an identification label for an automotive component: what needs to perform reliably in everyday use often starts with a sample.
But this sample must do more than simply look good. Are the dimensions and print quality correct? Is the barcode reliably readable? Does the adhesive match the substrate? Do the material and label construction meet the agreed technical specifications?
At robos-labels, the sampling process for industrial labels therefore begins with a thorough understanding of the application. Together with the customer, we review technical requirements, drawings, specifications and operating conditions. Based on these requirements, the label construction, substrate material, adhesive, printing process, colours and other relevant characteristics are defined. Samples are then manufactured under controlled conditions, as close as possible to actual series production.
“Effective sampling makes quality transparent and verifiable. The key is to clearly define, test and document the relevant characteristics together with the customer before series production begins.”
— Christoph Schwering, Quality Management, robos-labels
PPAP, PPF and EMPB: The Right Level of Documentation for Every Application
Structured product and process approval procedures are particularly important in the automotive industry. Depending on the customer and project, PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) according to AIAG or PPF/PPA (Production Process and Product Approval) according to VDA Volume 2 may be required.
In 2026, this topic is more relevant than ever. The 7th edition of VDA Volume 2 introduces a risk-based approach to product and process approval. Rather than relying on rigid documentation requirements, the scope of the PPF procedure is increasingly aligned with the evidence actually required. At the same time, the digitalisation of sampling processes and technical data exchange continues to advance.
Structured approval procedures can also provide significant benefits outside the automotive sector. In Technical Industries, for example, customer-specific Initial Sample Inspection Reports (EMPB) or approval packages based on PPAP/APQP principles may be used. For the aerospace industry, our brochure also covers First Article Inspection (FAI) according to EN 9102.
Test Early. Reduce Risks. Ensure Reliable Series Production.
The crucial stage takes place before series production begins: the customer evaluates the samples under the intended operating conditions. If adjustments are necessary, the results are incorporated into the specification and identification solution. Series production only begins once the agreed approval has been granted. This feedback loop is also an integral part of the robos-labels sampling process.
“Our service goes beyond simply printing a sample label. We want to provide our customers with a reliable basis for making their series-production decisions – supported by technical expertise, quality assurance and comprehensive documentation.”
— Daniel Sugg, Managing Director, robos-labels
This makes label sampling and initial sample inspection an essential part of the procurement, product development and quality assurance process. Requirements are clarified at an early stage, potential risks become visible and decisions are based on documented evidence.
