Label flammability in accordance with FMVSS 302 standard (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards)

The FMVSS 302 standard refers to the combustion behavior of materials, which will be used in the street vehicles like passenger cars, trucks, buses, and farm machines. This also includes labeling products which will be used in the vehicle interior. The US federal regulation has been developed to avoid injuries and cases of death which may be caused by negligently disposed smoldering cigarettes and matches. Most automotive manufacturers evaluate the flammability in accordance with FMVSS 302 or technically comparable standards of the respective OEM. For the examination of the labels – as a separate material and/or adhered to the original part – a mandatory testing procedure is necessary, which we offer in cooperation with our material suppliers.

The main features

  • The labels meet the statutory regulations
  • High resistance against fire and other negative impacts like chemicals and abrasion
  • No dangerous dripping of the melted foil
  • Subsequently inscribable with thermal transfer printing

Functions and advantages

The labels with standard conformity protect against claims for damages and offer product safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

This standard is mostly required in the automotive sector. Labeling products, which will be applied here, are:

  • Type plates
  • Warning labels
  • Consumer information in the vehicle interior

Also material combinations, transparent labels, preprinted logotypes and fonts as well as custom formats and die-cuts in individual sizes are possible. The labels are available rolled or sheeted.

  • Temperature resistance from 150° C (302° F) C to -80° C (-112° F)
  • Very thin (min. 6µ ) as well as very thick (175µ) combinations of the foils possible
  • High performance materials made of PVC, PO and polyester (PET)
  • Permanent adhesives with very good adhesive power for high- and low-energy substrates
  • Diverse carrier materials like compressed kraft paper in different thicknesses, transparent plastic liner, kraft paper siliconized on both sides, and environmentally stable kraft paper available
  • Subsequently inscribable with thermal transfer printing, laser engraving, and inkjet method

As a manufacturer robos-labels has a wide range of already approved and certified labeling solutions. When additional customized licenses are required, we can take on the approval- and certification process if desired.

We also cover the first article inspections (PPF, production process and product release) in accordance with the specifications of German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) as well as the American counterpart, a PPAP inspection (Production Part Approval Process) of the AIAG (Automotive Industry Action Group).
